Brand Strategy
Brand Design Checklist for Startup Founders
A complete checklist of brand assets every startup needs. Use this guide to audit your current branding and identify gaps that may be holding you back.
What does your startup actually need from a branding perspective? The answer varies by stage and situation.
This checklist helps you audit what you have, identify what you need, and prioritize what to build first.
Foundation Elements
Every startup needs these basics regardless of stage.
Logo
Your primary brand mark. Should work at small sizes for favicons and large sizes for presentations. Needs versions for light and dark backgrounds. File formats should include vector (SVG or AI) and raster (PNG) at multiple resolutions.
Audit question: Do you have a logo that represents your brand well and works in all necessary contexts?
Color Palette
Primary and secondary colors with defined hex codes, RGB values, and CMYK equivalents for print. Most brands need 3-5 colors total. Too few limits flexibility. Too many creates chaos.
Audit question: Do you have documented colors that are used consistently?
Typography
Primary typeface for headlines and secondary for body text. Should be legally licensed for your use cases. Include guidance on sizes, weights, and line heights.
Audit question: Do you have designated fonts with clear usage rules?
Brand Voice
How you communicate in words. Formal or casual? Technical or accessible? Defined voice ensures consistency across everyone who writes for your company.
Audit question: Could a new hire write in your voice without extensive guidance?
Digital Presence
Your online representation.
Website
At minimum, a landing page that explains what you do and how to contact you. Better is a full site with about, product, and contact pages. Best includes blog, resources, and customer stories.
Audit question: Does your website effectively communicate your value and convert visitors?
Social Profiles
Consistent avatar, banner images, and bio across platforms you actively use. Do not claim profiles you will not maintain.
Audit question: Are your social profiles consistent with your brand and current?
Email Signatures
Template for team email signatures with logo, contact information, and consistent formatting.
Audit question: Does your team use consistent, professional email signatures?
Favicon and App Icons
Small format versions of your identity for browser tabs and app stores. Often overlooked but highly visible.
Audit question: Do you have proper icons for all digital contexts?
Sales and Fundraising Materials
Assets that support business development.
Pitch Deck
Presentation for investors or sales conversations. Should reflect your brand while being clear and compelling.
Audit question: Does your pitch deck effectively tell your story with professional presentation?
One Pager
Single page summary of your company. Useful for leaving behind after meetings or sending as introduction.
Audit question: Do you have a concise leave behind document?
Case Studies
Documented customer success stories. Essential for later stage sales. Format can be PDF, web page, or both.
Audit question: Do you have compelling case studies that demonstrate value?
Proposal Templates
Branded templates for sending quotes and proposals. Professional presentation supports higher prices.
Audit question: Are your proposals consistent and professional?
Marketing Collateral
Assets for demand generation and awareness.
Social Media Templates
Branded templates for common social post types. Enables consistent presence without design resources for every post.
Audit question: Can your team create on brand social content easily?
Blog Post Graphics
Featured images and in-post visuals that maintain brand consistency across content.
Audit question: Does your blog content have consistent, branded visuals?
Presentation Template
Master template for company presentations beyond pitch deck. Conferences, webinars, internal meetings.
Audit question: Do all company presentations look professionally branded?
Ad Templates
Templates for common advertising formats. Display ads, social ads, retargeting creatives.
Audit question: Can you produce branded ads quickly when needed?
Documentation
Guidelines that ensure consistency.
Brand Guidelines
Document explaining how to use brand elements. Scope varies from simple one pager to comprehensive brand book.
Audit question: Could someone outside your company correctly apply your brand?
Messaging Framework
Documented value proposition, positioning statement, key messages, and proof points.
Audit question: Is your core messaging documented and consistent?
Asset Library
Organized collection of brand assets accessible to those who need them. Could be shared drive, brand portal, or asset management system.
Audit question: Can team members easily find the brand assets they need?
Priority by Stage
What to focus on when.

Logo, colors, basic website, pitch deck. Minimum viable brand that does not embarrass you.
Seed to Series A

Checklist Questions
How do I prioritize what to build?
Start with assets you use most frequently or that create most friction. A pitch deck used weekly matters more than business cards used monthly.
Should everything match perfectly?
Consistency matters but perfection is impossible. Focus on high visibility touchpoints. Allow some flexibility in less critical contexts.
How often should I update brand assets?
Review annually at minimum. Update when assets feel dated, when strategy changes, or when problems emerge with current materials.
Can I create brand assets myself?
Some assets work well DIY. Others benefit from professional help. Prioritize professional support for high stakes items like website and pitch deck.
Building Your Brand Asset Library
A complete brand asset library is built over time, not all at once. Start with foundations. Add assets as needs emerge. Maintain quality throughout.
